So you have decided you want a website to get a communication desire out, lets say for sake of example you are looking to sell some sexy thongs.
A niche industry with the following being a covering umbrella:
Clothing, underwear, knickers, sexy.
So your thinking…..mmmm…..lets get a catchy name that people will remember when they come like…..whorepresents.com.
Yeh nice and catchy, we represent baby!
Two things that seriously reek about this type of domain name:
1) The obvious, I just had to get that lovely Freudian slip in there, others include:
Expertsexchange.com
and my favourite:
Therapistfinder.com
2) But on track, the real reason that a funny or glib name is usually poor (unless you have a lot of marketing budget funds), is that you need to drive traffic to the site to monetize it, it is no use having a name no one will guess, you need to do some research into what people are typing for related to your particular niche (and we pronounce that “Neesh” over in the UK, not “Nitch”….;)
Now after you have realised that “sexy thongs” has a search hit of around 90,000 globally using Googles very useful Keyword Tool
So taking that knowledge, how does that inform your decision in finding a good web name URL, let me tell you.
1, Look for the following:
- A) www.sexythongs.com
- B) www.sexythongs.net
- C) www.sexythongs.org
- D) www.sexy-thongs.com
- E) www.sexy-thongs.net
- F) www.sexy-thongs.org
The decision over .net or .org is really not worth worrying about, some take offence if you are selling on a .org, but from my research I do not see Google penalising such names, you would be an organisation after all!
I hope this makes sense, its a fascinating area, but believe me that getting the right domain name is crucial if you are looking for organic results via searches……
In future posts I will be discussing primed terms users type to search for goods and services, how browsers use search engines and how to avoid buying names that may not attract the right people even if you get to number one in the results!
